About New World Symphony

The New World Symphony, America’s Orchestral Academy (NWS), is where the future of orchestral music is envisioned, cultivated and shared. Through fellowships lasting up to three years, NWS prepares talented young musicians on the cusp of their professional careers to become artistic leaders in performing, educational and community-based organizations worldwide.   

Led by Artistic Director Stéphane Denève, NWS Fellows refine their musical voices, while developing the entrepreneurial, collaborative and civic skills required of 21st-century musicians. Since its co-founding in 1987 by Artistic Director Laureate Michael Tilson Thomas and Lin and Ted Arison, NWS has helped launch the careers of over 1,300 alumni who now shape the artform around the globe.

NWS explores the future of orchestral music at the New World Center, its state-of-the-art campus and musical laboratory in Miami Beach. Designed by Frank Gehry, the New World Center is among the most technologically advanced performance venues in the world and is home to the Knight New Media Center. 

NWS offers Fellows immersive engagement with a broad range of repertoire, along with personalized mentorship from leading conductors, soloists and visiting faculty. These artistic relationships extend beyond the concert hall through NWS’s robust digital initiatives.  

Each year, more than 1,000 graduates of music schools and conservatories worldwide compete for approximately 30 available fellowships. Fellows are chosen for their musical excellence, artistic promise and commitment to shaping the future of classical music.  

NWS is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Music.
